Treatment types

Seeking help when life’s difficulties become too great can feel like one of the most daunting steps to take. You may be confused about what type of help is available, what type of help you need, or how that particular approach works. You may even question whether you even need help from a professional, or worry about what it means to enlist the services of a Counsellor/Psychologist/Psychotherapist. Please be assured that absolutely anyone can benefit from having a professional source of support, and the support you receive will stay with you as you build your internal resources. Almost everyone feels concerned before they begin, but less so once you begin to explore your problems within a safe and supportive therapeutic relationship.

I offer three different therapeutic approaches and ways of working. Its up to you, the client, how you feel comfortable working, so we will tailor our work to suit your needs.

Creative Therapy

As a trained Dance Movement Psychotherapist, I use the four stages of creativity- Preparation, Incubation, Illumination and Evaluation – within each session, and over the course of therapy.  Each stage begins by setting goals you can accomplish, once those goals have been reached you we will start to work on the goals that are more difficult to reach. Your goals and your progression through the stages are negotiated between us as suitable for you. The stages are cyclic, which means that you may revisit a particular stage several times during the course of treatment.

The four creative stages are:

  • Preparation: This is the introduction stage, in which we get to know one another, gain a sense of your current state (mind, emotions, physical) and which problems you want to work on.
  • Incubation: During this stage you will be helped to ‘clear a space’ in order to listen to the body, set problems aside, and release all the tension and conscious chatter. Instead we will allow your imagination and creativity to come out using writing, movement, drawing, other creative materials or simply talking.
  • Illumination: In this stage we will start to ‘join the dots’ as insight and awareness are developed. You start to notice personally-relevant patterns and meanings in your creative expressions, which we will develop further at a depth and pace comfortable to you. Often, people will start feeling lighter and less burdened by their problems, and more confident with working creatively, as they start to find clarity and purpose in the process.
  • Evaluation:  During this last stage, we will discuss what you discovered from the previous stages and how you plan to apply these insights into your daily life. It is at this point that you learn how to use the new skills and insights to improve the quality of your life. Some of these improvements might be: effective communication, improved emotional, spiritual and physical health, increased self-esteem, self-image and self-awareness, better decision making and strengthened relationships.

Motivational Counselling

Motivational interviewing (MI) is a form of person-centred, solution-focused counselling that helps you to resolve feelings of being stuck, not knowing which way to go, or feeling that you cannot cope with making changes. It helps you to find your internal motivation needed to make lasting changes.
MI is “down to earth”, practical and usually short-term, and acknowledges how very difficult it can be to take the first step towards change. Also, how difficult it is to maintain changes, which is why MI is often used to overcome habits, compulsions and addictions and other behaviours that affect health negatively.
MI helps individuals to become internally motivated to change unhelpful behaviours and make better choices, and can also help prepare people for more intensive treatments such as psychotherapy (see above).
You may not feel ready to change, but MI will help you to resolve ambivalence and move through the stages of emotional change needed to evoke your own motivation and core values. To do this we will explore your reasons for/against change, work out where your true motivation lies, and develop a commitment to the next step of your journey as appropriate for you.

Lifestyle/Health Coaching

Do you have a lifestyle habit that you just can’t seem to manage consistently? Then you are certainly not alone! Whether its giving up smoking, spending less time on the sofa, or learning to manage your food and nutrition, most people could benefit from making healthy changes. This is where lifestyle coaching is used.

Having worked in NHS specialist weight management assisting people with obesity-related problems, assisted with smoking cessation, attained a degree in health, nutrition and exercise, and having overcome my own health challenges, I know how hard it is to navigate the minefield of diet, exercise and healthy behaviours.

The overall goal of lifestyle/health coaching is to establish your strengths, barriers and personal preferences in order to find a way of caring for your health that works for you almost effortlessly – and continues to work. The approach I teach for food and ‘diet’ is called Intuitive Eating. There is actually no ‘diet’ involved, instead we will learn tune into and respect your own body and it’s regulatory signals and respond in a way that feels ‘right’. So whether the challenge is nutrition, eating behaviour, physical activity, exercise, or something else entirely, you will develop the capacity to do it intuitively and, moreover, enjoy the new behaviour.
